An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror
In All the Shah’s Men, journalist and historian Stephen Kinzer revisits one of the most consequential turning points in modern Middle Eastern history: the 1953 coup in Iran that overthrew Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and restored the power of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Drawing on historical documents, eyewitness accounts, and political analysis, Kinzer reconstructs the events that led to the overthrow of Iran’s democratically elected prime minister, whose decision to nationalize the country’s oil industry challenged the interests of Britain and the United States. As tensions escalated, the CIA and Britain’s MI6 organized a covert operation that helped bring down Mossadegh’s government, fundamentally altering Iran’s political trajectory.
Beyond recounting the mechanics of the coup, Kinzer explores its far-reaching consequences for Iran, the United States, and the wider Middle East. He traces how foreign intervention strengthened the Shah’s authoritarian rule, deepened anti-American sentiment, and contributed to the political grievances that culminated in the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The book also examines the broader legacy of Western intervention in the region, questioning the assumption that covert operations and regime change can reliably secure long-term political stability.
Written in an accessible, narrative-driven style, All the Shah’s Men combines investigative journalism with historical storytelling to illuminate the complex relationship between oil, power, nationalism, and foreign policy. Kinzer’s account offers a compelling perspective on how decisions made behind closed doors can shape the destinies of nations for generations. For readers interested in Iranian history, American foreign policy, intelligence operations, and the historical roots of contemporary tensions between the West and the Middle East, this book provides an essential starting point for understanding a pivotal episode whose consequences continue to be debated today.

او تنها فردي در تاريخ ايران ميباشد كه دموكراسي را به معناي واقعي برقرار كرده است
البته كساني كه سخن از دموكراسي گفته اند بسيارند اما مصدق كسي بود كه به آن عمل كرد.
