The Spice-Box of Earth

The Spice-Box of Earth is Leonard Cohen's second poetry collection, first published in 1961. Long before he became internationally famous as a singer and songwriter, Cohen established himself as one of Canada's most distinctive literary voices through works like this. The collection explores themes of love, desire, faith, loneliness, mortality, and the search for meaning, blending everyday experiences with spiritual reflection. Its title refers to the spice box used in the Jewish Havdalah ceremony, symbolizing the connection between the sacred and ordinary life. Written in Cohen's lyrical and deeply evocative style, many of the ideas and images found in this collection would later reappear in his celebrated songs. The Spice-Box of Earth remains one of the defining works of Cohen's early literary career and an excellent introduction to his poetic world.
