Letter to a Child Never Born by Oriana Fallaci is a deeply personal and thought-provoking novel that takes the form of a long, intimate letter from a woman to the unborn child she carries. When she discovers that she is pregnant, she begins to question what motherhood will mean for her life, her independence, and her future. Torn between the desire to preserve her freedom and the possibility of bringing another human being into the world, she reflects on love, responsibility, sacrifice, and the uncertainty of existence. Through this unusual narrative, Fallaci transforms a private emotional struggle into a broader meditation on the choices that shape a human life.
First published in Italian in 1975, the novel explores questions that extend far beyond pregnancy and motherhood. Is it right to bring a child into a world marked by injustice, suffering, and inequality? Can a woman choose motherhood without surrendering her individuality, ambitions, and sense of self? And what gives life its meaning when pain and uncertainty are unavoidable parts of being human? Fallaci approaches these questions with emotional intensity and philosophical urgency, challenging readers to confront their own beliefs about freedom, birth, and the value of existence. Both intimate and unsettling, Letter to a Child Never Born remains a compelling exploration of female autonomy, the burden of choice, and the difficult relationship between love and responsibility.
